Project Overview:

The Green Rooftop Module is an innovative, sustainable solution developed by students as part of the Citeuropass program. This project aims to create accessible, eco-friendly green spaces in urban environments using wood-based modular designs.

The Challenge:

Urban areas often lack green spaces, contributing to issues such as the heat island effect, reduced biodiversity, and poor air quality. Traditional green roof solutions can be expensive and complex to implement, limiting their widespread adoption.

Our Solution:

The Green Rooftop Module offers a frugal, DIY approach to creating green spaces on urban rooftops. By using wood as the primary material and incorporating environmentally friendly design principles, this project makes urban greening accessible and sustainable.

How It Works:

  1. Modular wooden frames are constructed to fit various roof sizes.
  2. A layer of waterproof material is applied to protect the roof structure.
  3. Lightweight growing medium is added to support plant life.
  4. Native plants, chosen for their resilience and ecological benefits, are planted.
  5. An optional irrigation system can be integrated for ease of maintenance.

The Team:

The Green Rooftop Module was developed by a collaborative team of students from different European countries, showcasing cross-cultural innovation in addressing urban environmental challenges.

Impact and Future Potential:

This project demonstrates how frugal innovation can contribute to urban sustainability and biodiversity. By making green roofs more accessible, it has the potential to transform urban landscapes, improve air quality, and mitigate the urban heat island effect across European cities.
